Cosmetic surgery can be a life changing step for some people. When looking at your budget for surgery, don’t forget to take into consideration the care needed after surgery. Post- surgical lymphatic massage by a qualified lymphatic therapist will help you to decrease swelling and discomfort, heal faster, and help prevent complications such as seroma and fibrosis. Lymphatic massage is gentle and should not cause pain.

If your surgeon recommends opening up of incisions after liposuction for fluid drainage, it must be done by the physician or a nurse to minimize risk for infection. This practice is NOT within the scope of practice for massage therapists! This practice is also NOT lymphatic massage. Nor is it just “pushing the fluid in one direction.” Lymphatic massage is a gently, rhythmic massage which encourages the lymph vessels to open and take in excess fluid for the body to remove naturally. It is very effective for people with lymphedema, as well as before and after surgery.

There are many weekend warrior lymphatic “certification” classes, however, a properly trained CLT, has undergone an intensive 135 hour or more program. These programs include classroom study, as well as extensive hands-on training for complete decongestive lymphatic therapy. This includes lymphatic massage, bandaging, skin care, and exercise. Do your research and make sure you are seeing a qualified lymphatic therapist with experience in surgical care.
